Not many years ago, the RIA fee-based compensation model was considered the outlier. While that’s no longer the case, there are still plenty of advisors who work entirely on commission, which sets up a natural conflict between compensation and advising. In his April 26th, 2023, practice management column for InvestmentNews, “The superiority of the fee-based compensation model,” Allworth Co-CEO Scott Hanson explains that, while the repeating revenue streams are attractive, it’s the aligned interests between the client and the advisor that make fee-based advising a superior model overall.
